I was house managing a Freshman Orientation event at the Brooks Center on Monday. Parents and their kids were inside the theatre listening to all sorts of advice on what to expect freshman year at Clemson. A girl sat near me in the lobby. I thought she may have been a new freshman that came late or was waiting for someone to come out of the theatre. She was dressed in blue jeans, casual top…had long unkempt wavy hair. She explained that she as an intern at a local paper was sent to the Brooks Center to interview parents/kids on the orientation experience. We chatted a bit and she complained that “people didn’t really take her seriously”…I had a few suggestions for her:
1. Wear that press badge they give you, it will give you a “free” air of authority.
2. Dress more professionally…not expensively. If you are serious about your job…dress like you mean it.
3. Present and introduce yourself with confidence.
This is the real world.
